Flu season is definitely in full swing…and, many pediatricians’ offices, urgent care clinics and emergency centers (ECs) have been seeing large volumes of children with flu-like symptoms arrive daily. Most children who have the flu will exhibit mild symptoms (such as fever, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, muscle/body aches, headache, vomiting/diarrhea, decreased appetite, and fatigue/tiredness) and recover in less than two weeks. A little background…my wife Rachel and I fell in love and dated long distance (Houston to Detroit) for just over a year before we got engaged. My love was so strong for her, the only thing that made sense was if my proposal took place in the center of a heart made by picture frames and pictures of our adventures together.

One of the most common misconceptions I’ve heard among fearful patients is that eating foods high in fat will subsequently increase body fat. I grew up during the low-fat diet craze of the 90s, when health trends began pushing people to believe fat was the root cause of our country’s growing obesity epidemic. I distinctly remember going to the grocery store with my parents and returning home with low-fat crackers, cookies, margarine, etc. Yet, when companies remove fat from foods, they’re actually adding in sugars, salt and chemicals to make the products tasty and shelf-stable.
